The Simple block carries a text that is neither a heading nor a paragraph, with all the style and animation settings. This page describes when to choose it, how to type into it, make it clickable and have it activate other blocks.
Choose the Simple block
A heading introduces a section and a paragraph carries a sentence of the content. Screen readers and search engines use them to understand the page. A “New” label, a key figure, a small mention or a badge is neither. The Simple block carries them without giving them a role and offers all the style and animation settings.
| Your text | Block to choose |
|---|---|
| Opens a section of the page | Heading |
| Is a sentence of the content | Paragraph, see Text |
| Is neither a heading nor a sentence: label, badge, key figure or mention | Simple block |
Add a Simple block
- In the editor, open the inserter and search for Simple block, or type
div. Add a block details the ways to insert a block. - Click in the block and type your text. As long as it is empty, the block shows Your text, which is never published.
- Format words with the toolbar, as in a paragraph: bold, italic or link.
| Key | Effect |
|---|---|
Enter | Ends the block and creates a paragraph below. |
Shift+Enter | Inserts a line break in the block. |
Settings tab
Link panel
The Link panel makes the whole block a clickable area. Its settings are those of all blocks that carry a link; Container details the targets and the six openings.
| Setting | Effect | Default value |
|---|---|---|
| Field Search or paste a URL… | The target: a page, a post, a composition, a file, the home page, an archive or a typed address (https://, mailto:, tel:, #anchor). | Empty |
| Hide the link from search engines | Removes the plain address from the published page. The block stays clickable with the mouse and the keyboard. | Off |
| Link opening | A classic opening, in a modal or in a side panel. | Classic (in the browser tab) |
| Accessible name | The name announced by screen readers in place of the block’s text. | Empty |
| Nofollow | Asks search engines not to follow the link. | Off |
| Open in a new tab | Opens the target in a new tab, with the classic opening only. | Off |

The block’s text is the link’s name. A “See the catalog” block is announced “See the catalog” by a screen reader. Fill in Accessible name only if this text does not say where the link leads. Then make it start with the visible text.
Advanced panel
The collapsed Advanced panel contains the HTML anchor field. An identifier such as pricing lets an address ending in #pricing bring the visitor to this block. Spaces become dashes and the # is removed. The anchor lets another block target this one in its Interactions section.
Styles tab
The Simple block is set in the Default, Hover and Active states. It receives the registered styles: the Signature style, shipped with the product, puts it in the site’s handwriting font.
| Panel | Guide |
|---|---|
| Colors | Color a block |
| Typography | Format a text. The Text alignment setting there places the text left, center, right or justified. |
| Size & Spacing | Set size, borders and effects. This panel does not change on hover. |
| Borders, Effects, Transitions | Set size, borders and effects |
Animations tab
The Add animation button gives the block an effect. Its Trigger is When visible, On hover, When activated or On scroll. The Interactions section does the opposite: a click, a hover or the activation of the Simple block activates another block. That block is designated by its HTML anchor, with Add target block. Animate a block details both.
Place the Simple block in a layout
The Simple block does not receive other blocks. To place several items side by side or in a grid, put them in a Container. The block’s place in a row or a grid is set in the Children section of that container. There you set its Order, Align self, Justify self and, in a grid, its columns and rows.
Accessibility
- Without a link, the block is a text with no role: it is read in turn, without being announced as a heading or a paragraph.
- With a link, it receives focus with the
Tabkey and is activated withEnter. - When Open in a new tab is checked, screen readers announce “opens in a new tab”. Do not write this mention in the text: it would be read twice.
Limits
- The block carries a single text. For several paragraphs, stack several blocks in a Container.
- It accepts neither an image nor a button. For a clickable card that gathers an image, a text and a button, use a linked Container.
