A photo or video credit names its author. This article teaches you how to write it on the media, display it under a photo and list all your credits on a page.
Before you start
- The credit is written on the media in your media library. You write it once and it follows the photo wherever you place it.
- A credit only appears where you place it: under a photo or on a page with the Media credits block.
- The credit and the alt text are part of your site’s export.
Write a media file’s credit
- In the admin menu, open Media then Media library. Click a media file.
- At the bottom of the details, fill in Credit with the name to credit: a photographer, an agency or a stock image bank.
- Optional: fill in Credit link with the page the name should lead to, for example the photographer’s website.
- Leave the field. The credit is saved.

| Field | Content | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Credit | The name to credit. | The name the file carries, if it carries one. Otherwise empty. |
| Credit link | A web address that starts with https://. Any other value is not kept. | Empty |
| Source | Shown for a media file imported from Pexels, linked to its page on Pexels. It cannot be edited. | None |
The same fields are found under the description on a media file’s screen, opened with Show more details. Click Update to save them. Emptying a field removes the credit.
Reuse the photographer’s signature
Professional photographers write their name and a copyright notice in their files. When you upload a JPEG or TIFF photo, your site fills in Credit with the author’s name or, if it is missing, with the copyright notice.
This filling happens only at upload and only if the field is empty. A credit you edited or erased is never rewritten.
A media file imported from Pexels arrives credited: its author’s name, the link to their profile and Pexels as the source. Find a photo on Pexels describes the import.
Display the credit under a photo
- In the Media block, place the cursor in a paragraph or heading of its caption.
- In the toolbar, click Data.
- In the Value list, choose Credit. The editor shows
{media_credit}. - Optional: write “Photo:” in Before the value. This text only appears if the media file has a credit.
Your site displays the credited name of that media file. If you replace the photo, the caption cites the author of the new one. A media file with no credit shows nothing. If the caption contained only the credit, it disappears.
The Credit data is only offered in a Media block’s caption. The name is shown without a link, because the caption can sit in a block that is already clickable.
List all the credits on a page
- Open the page that should show the credits, for example a “Credits” page or your legal notice.
- Add the Media credits block. Add a block details the insertion.
- Save the page. The block lists all the credits in your media library.

- The block shows one row per credited name. Forty photos from the same studio make a single row.
- The name is a link when one of its media files has a Credit link.
- When a name’s media files come from Pexels, the name is followed by on Pexels, with a link to the site.
- Names are sorted in alphabetical order.
The list updates each time the page is displayed. A credit you add appears and a credit you empty disappears. As long as no media file carries a credit, the block shows nothing on the site. The editor shows a message instead.
Format the list
| Setting | Effect | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Tab Settings, panel List display | The bullet of each row: none, disc, circle, square, numbers, letters or Roman numerals. | The browser’s bullet |
| The block’s Styles tab | The typography, colors, borders and margins of the list. | Inherited from the page |
| Block Credited name | The style of each name, at rest, on hover and on focus. You set it once for the whole list. | The look of your links |
To select the Credited name block, click any name in the list.
Know when to credit
- Some licenses require the credit, for example the Creative Commons “BY” license. A contract with a photographer may provide for it.
- Pexels’s license does not require a credit. The block remains useful as a courtesy to photographers.
- The credit does not replace the alt text. The alt text describes the image and the credit names its author.
