Write the header, menu and footer once

A composition is a set of blocks written once and shown on every page that places it. This article teaches you to create your compositions, place them, give them a role, edit them and delete them.

Before you start

  • Your header, your mobile menu, your footer and your consent banner are compositions. A call-to-action strip repeated on several pages can be one.
  • Editing a composition edits every page that shows it.
  • The list of compositions is reserved for the site’s administrators.

Open the list of compositions

In the Templates menu, click Compositions. The list shows your compositions from the most recent to the oldest, with their category and date. The Content models category holds your content templates.

Hovering a composition shows under its title Edit, Delete permanently, Export as JSON and Clone.

Create a composition

Insert a creation from the catalog that places the header, footer, mobile menu or consent bannerThe composition is created with its role and placed where the creation puts it.
In the ⋮ menu of a block, choose Create a composition, leave Synced on, then click CreateA composition made of this block, placed where the block was.
On a row of Templates > Compositions, click CloneA copy of an existing composition, to rework.

A composition receives the current language when it is created. Check it in the Language tab before translating it.

Place the site’s compositions

The home page, page not found and content structure creations place four compositions. The catalog finds them by their role: Header, Site footer, Mobile menu and Consent banner.

Before the insertion, the creation shows a notice for each role.

Previewing a creation creates no composition. They are born on the click on Insert. Start from a ready-made creation details the catalog.

Place a composition

Four gestures place a composition.

  • Drop it as a block in a page, a template or another composition.
  • Choose it in the Composition to open setting of the Navigation block. The menu button opens it on a phone.
  • Choose it as a Composition type destination of a link or a button. It opens in a window or a side panel.
  • Have it opened by the search box of a list, when that box opens in a window.

On a multilingual site, a placed composition shows its translation on the pages of each language. You place it once for all languages.

Give a composition a role

A composition you made yourself can become the header or footer that the catalog reuses.

  1. Open the composition from Templates > Compositions.
  2. In the right column, Composition tab, choose a role in the Role list, under Sync status. The role is saved as soon as you choose it.
The Composition tab of the Header: logo and menu header: Sync status Synced, the Role list set to Header with its help, then the Language line, French (France).
  • A role belongs to a language. A composition without a language shows This composition has no language yet. under the list, which stays grayed out. First choose its language in the Language tab.
  • A role already held in this language does not move to another composition. The site shows The role “…” is already held in this language by “…”. with the link Open the composition that holds it.

Edit a composition

To change its structure, for example add, remove or move a block, open it from Templates > Compositions. All the pages where it is placed change with it.

From the page that shows it, you edit its texts and images: the text of a heading, the label of a link, a button or a field, and the image of a Media block. Click in the block and type.

Change the look of your header

An inserted creation is added where the Lovely Render creations block is. The blocks already there stay in place: remove the old header before inserting the new one.

  1. Open your header from Templates > Compositions.
  2. In the List view, select the first block of the header, then delete it. Repeat for each block until the composition is empty.
  3. Insert the Lovely Render creations block.
  4. Choose another header from the catalog, for example Header: centered menu, then click Insert.
  5. Save the composition.

The pages that place this header show the new one with no other setting. On a multilingual site, the translation of the header is a separate composition: redo it the same way.

Delete a composition

A composition has no trash. Three gestures delete it permanently: Delete permanently on its row, the bulk action Delete permanently and Delete in the ⋮ menu of the editor.

A composition in use cannot be deleted. The site shows “…” is used by … and cannot be deleted. then Remove it from these contents first. Each content item is named with a link. A content item in the trash carries the mention in the bin.

  1. Read the message and note the content items it lists.
  2. Open each one, remove the block, link or burger button that places it, then save.
  3. Retry the deletion. It succeeds as soon as no content item places the composition.

When a content item places the composition in another language, it carries the mention via its translation “…”. To delete it, detach it from its translations in the Language tab.

A composition with a role is deleted like the others as soon as nothing places it anymore. The role is freed. The next creation that asks for it creates a new one from its starting version.

To recover a composition deleted by mistake, restore a version of the site. If it came from the catalog, reinsert the creation that had placed it: its texts have to be redone.
