# Text

The **Paragraph**, **List** and **List item** blocks carry the running text of your pages. This page describes what Lovely Render adds to them: the shipped paragraph styles, then the type, numbering and marker of a list.

## The text blocks

Three WordPress blocks carry the running text of your pages. Lovely Render keeps them as you know them. It adds the registered styles and its **Settings**, **Styles** and **Animations** tabs.

| Block | Purpose | Own settings |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Paragraph** | A sentence or a paragraph of the content. | An HTML anchor and three shipped styles. |
| **List** | A bulleted or numbered list. | The list type, the numbering and the marker. |
| **List item** | A line of a list. | Its own marker. |

For a text that is neither a heading nor a sentence of the content, a label or a key figure for example, use the [Simple block](https://lovelyrender.com/documentation/simple-block/).

## Add a paragraph

1. Click below the last block of the page and type your text: a paragraph appears. You can also search for it in the inserter ([Add a block](https://lovelyrender.com/documentation/add-block/)).
2. Press `Enter` to start another paragraph, or `Shift+Enter` to start a new line in the same one.
3. For a link on a few words, select them and click **Link** in the toolbar, or press `Ctrl+K`.

An empty paragraph accepts the slash: type `/` followed by the name of a block to replace the paragraph with that block.

## Set up a paragraph

### Settings tab

The **Advanced** panel contains the **HTML anchor** field. An identifier such as `hours` lets an address ending in `#hours` take the visitor to this paragraph.

### Styles tab

The paragraph is set in the **Default**, **Hover** and **Active** states. Three styles shipped with the product give it a look in one click.

| Style | Look |
| --- | --- |
| **Eyebrow** | Small size, capitals and spaced letters, for the line placed above a heading. |
| **Caption** | Small size and muted color, for a clarification or a caption. |
| **Signature** | The handwriting font of the site. |

| Panel | Guide |
| --- | --- |
| **Colors** | [Color a block](https://lovelyrender.com/documentation/color-block/) |
| **Typography** | [Style text](https://lovelyrender.com/documentation/format-text/) |
| **Size & Spacing**, **Borders**, **Effects**, **Transitions** | [Set size, borders and effects](https://lovelyrender.com/documentation/size-borders-effects/) |

### Animations tab

The **Animations** tab makes the paragraph appear or move. [Animate a block](https://lovelyrender.com/documentation/animate-block/) describes the effects.

## Add a list

1. In an empty paragraph, type `- ` or `1. ` then your first item, or insert the **List** block from the inserter.
2. Press `Enter` to add an item.
3. For a sub-list, press `Tab` at the start of an item.

## Set up a list

### List style panel

The **List style** panel of the **Settings** tab sets the structure of the list. It applies to all states and all screens.

| Setting | Effect | Default value |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **List type** | **Bulleted** or **Numbered**. | **Bulleted** |
| **Nested numbering** | Numbers each item relative to its parent: 1, then 1.1, then 1.1.1. Numbered list only. | Off |
| **Start value** | The number of the first item. Empty, the list starts at 1. Numbered list only. | Empty |
| **Reverse order** | The numbering counts down. Numbered list only. | Off |

### Marker panel

The **Marker** panel of the **Styles** tab draws the bullet or the number. It is set per state and per screen.

| Setting | Effect | Default value |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Marker style** | The shape of the marker: **None**, **Disc**, **Circle**, **Square**, **Decimal**, **Decimal (leading zero)**, **Alphabetic**, **Roman**, **Lower greek**, numbering in another script (Georgian, Armenian, Hebrew, Hiragana, Katakana, CJK decimal, Arabic-Indic), **Custom string** or **Icon**. | **Default**, the one from the style or the browser |
| **Case** | **Lowercase** or **Uppercase**, for **Alphabetic** and **Roman**. | **Lowercase** |
| **Custom marker** | The character or short text used as the marker, for example `★`. The space that follows is added. For **Custom string**. | Empty |
| Icon picker, **Size**, **Gap** | An icon from the library as the marker, its size and the space before the text, in `px`, `em` or `rem`. For **Icon**. | `1em` for the size, `0.5em` for the gap |
| **Indent (px)** | The indent of nested lists. On the list only. | Empty, meaning 40 px |

On a **List item**, the **Marker** panel changes the marker of that item and of the lists it contains. The list panel then counts the items that have their own marker, for example **1 item overrides the list style.** It offers **Reset all overrides**.

The other panels of the **Styles** tab and the **Animations** tab are those of the paragraph, on the list as on each item.

## On a phone

The panels of the **Styles** tab, **Marker** included, are set screen by screen. A shorter indent or a smaller size can apply to **Mobile** only.

## Accessibility

- A list is announced as a list by screen readers, with its number of items. For an enumeration, prefer a list to paragraphs that start with a dash.
- A paragraph in the **Eyebrow** style remains a paragraph: the line does not enter the heading outline.

## Limits

- The **Custom marker** refuses certain characters, including `<`, `>`, `;`, `{`, `}` and `@`.
- The **Eyebrow**, **Caption** and **Signature** styles belong to the paragraph. The Simple block has its own **Signature** style.
