# Display a content item’s data

The fields, title and dates of a content item appear on your pages without being retyped. This article teaches you to place a field with its block and to write a data value in the middle of a text. It also shows how to link a text to the content item and mark a date for search engines.

## Choose the block or the Data format

Two tools display what a content item holds. They read the same value: fix it in the content item and it changes everywhere it is displayed.

| Tool | Purpose | Example |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The **Content field** | Show a field as a block in its own right, formatted like the other blocks. | A property’s area in large type under its title. |
| The **Data** | Place a data value in the middle of a paragraph or a heading: a field, the title, the excerpt, the author or a date. | “Published on June 21, 2026” under the title of a post. |

The editor offers the fields of the content item that the place where you put the data refers to. The section Understand the fields offered details each place. The title, excerpt, author and dates are offered everywhere.

## Understand the fields offered

A data value displays the value of the content item that the place where it sits refers to. On a content item’s page, it is that content item. In a list card, it is the card’s content item. The inserter, the block’s **Which field** list and the **Value** list of the **Data** format therefore offer the fields of that content item.

| Where | Fields offered |
| --- | --- |
| A content item’s text | Those of the content item’s type. |
| The card of a **Content list** | Those of the types checked in the list. A card reserved for a type by **This template applies to** offers those of that type. |
| A list whose **Query source** is **Archive** | Those of the archive type that the template shows. |
| A list whose source is **Reference** or **Siblings**, with no type checked, set on a reference field | Those of the types that have this reference field. |
| The card of a **References** | Those of the type of the referenced content items. |
| The template of a type’s content items, or of their overlay window | Those of that type. A page template offers those of pages. |
| The **Previous post**, **Next post** or **Parent page** link of a **Post navigation** | Those of the content item’s type. |
| A composition, a list with no type checked, the **Term page** link of a **Post navigation** or a template shared by all content items | All the fields of the site, filed under the name of their type. |
| A template that does not display a content item, outside a list: the home page, page not found, an archive or a search. The **Archive of this type** link of a **Post navigation**. | None. |

The closest block decides. A list placed in the template of another type offers the fields of the type it displays.

When several types are offered, the inserter writes each field’s type in parentheses, for example **Area (Projects)**. A field that several types declare appears once, with the name of each. The **Which field** and **Value** lists file the fields under the name of their type.

**Tip:** To find a list’s fields in the inserter, first select a block of its card, or the card itself.

## Place a field with its block

1. Open in the editor the content item, page or template that must display the field.
2. Select a block where the field goes, for example a block of a list card.
3. Open the inserter and search for the field name, for example `Area`. The fields of this place appear there under their label. [Add a block](https://lovelyrender.com/documentation/add-block/) explains how to insert a block.
4. Insert the block. In the **Settings** tab of the sidebar, **Field** panel, set how it displays.

| Setting | Effect | Default value |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Which field** | The field displayed, among those of the block’s place. It can be changed afterward. | The field chosen in the inserter. |
| **Shown as** | The format of the value, depending on the field type. Absent when the type has only one format. | The first format of the type. |
| **Decimals** | The number of decimals, from 0 to 6. Offered with the **Number** and **Percentage** formats. | 0. |
| **Date pattern** | A date format written by hand. Offered with the **Custom pattern** format. | Empty. |
| **Before the value** | A text displayed before the value, for example `Area: `. | Empty. |
| **After the value** | A text displayed after the value, for example ` m²`. | Empty. |
| **HTML tag** | The block’s HTML tag, among `span`, `div` and `p`. | `span`. |

| Field type | Displayed as formats |
| --- | --- |
| **Text** or **Long text** | **As stored**. |
| **Whole number**, **Number** or **Number on a slider** | **As stored**, **Number** or **Percentage**. |
| **Yes / no** | **Yes / No** or **Tick or cross**. |
| **Date** or **Date and time** | **Short**, **Long**, **Relative** (“3 days ago”) or **Custom pattern**. |
| **Time** | **Short** or **Long**. |
| **Email**, **Address** or **Phone** | **As stored** or **Clickable link**. |
| **Choice** | **Choice label**. |
| **Media** | **Image**: the image or video the field holds. |

The block is formatted like the others: colors, typography, size, borders, effects, saved styles and animations.

The text before and after the value belongs to the block. A translated page, which is a separate content item, therefore has its own texts.

In a content item’s editor, the block shows the value that content item holds. While the field is empty, it shows the field name, so your layout stays readable. In a list card, in a template and in a **Post navigation**, it shows the field name: this model serves several content items, each with its value.

### Display a Media field

A **Media** field holds an image or a video. The block shows it on the site and in the content item’s editor. It then carries the **Video settings** panel, which only matters if the field holds a video: an image displays as it is.

| Setting | Effect | Default value |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Playback** | **Manual**: the visitor starts the video from its player. **Plays once when visible**, **Loops while visible** or **On hover**: the video starts by itself, with no player and no sound. | **Manual**. |
| **Show a pause button** | With **Loops while visible** and **On hover**, the button that lets the visitor stop the video. | On. |

The setting belongs to the block: the same video can start on hover in a card and from its player on the content item’s page. The **Follows the scroll** mode of the **Media** block is not offered here.

## Write a data value in a text

1. Place the cursor in a paragraph or a heading, where the data value goes.
2. In the block toolbar, open the text formats and click **Data**. A chip is placed and the **Data** panel opens in the sidebar.
3. In **Value**, choose the data.
4. Optional: choose its format in **Shown as** and a text in **Before the value** or **After the value**.

| Value | Display on the page |
| --- | --- |
| **Title** | The content item’s title. |
| **Excerpt** | Its excerpt. |
| **Author** | The name of its author as their profile displays it, never their email address. |
| **Publication date** | Its publication date. |
| **Last modified** | The date of its last modification. |
| **Today’s date** | The date of the day the page is read. |
| **In force since** | In the legal documents template only: the date the text in force went online. |
| **Credit** | In the caption of a **Media** block only: the credited name of the media. |
| A content item field | The field’s value. |
| **A date written in the text** | Your own words, marked with a day. The section Mark a date written in a text details it. |

A date displays in the **Short**, **Long** or **Relative** format. **Short** is the default format. It follows the page’s language: the long format writes “21 juin 2026” on a French page and “June 21, 2026” on an English page. A field offers the formats of its type.

The text before and after the value only displays if the value displays. A content item with no excerpt displays neither.

In the editor, the chip shows the name of the data and not its value. The same text can thus serve all the content items of a list, each with its value. On the site, each content item displays its own.

In a list, the card you are editing keeps the names. The other cards of the preview show the values of their content item, format and text included. Click another card to edit it in turn.

**Warning:** To change the value, edit the content item: its title, its excerpt or the **Data** tab. The chip cannot be edited with the keyboard. A selection straddling it, followed by a keystroke, breaks it: place it again, the data is not lost.

### Format a data value

Select the chip and apply a text style, a link or a language to it, as to words. The chip’s panel also has its **Styles** tab: colors, typography and saved styles. The formatting applies to the value displayed on the site.

## Link a text to the content item

In a list card, a text or a button can lead to the card’s content item. The title of a new card already leads there.

1. Select the text and apply a link, or open a block’s **Link** panel, like a “Read more” button.
2. Click in the empty link field. **Link to the item** is the first suggestion, marked **Card**.
3. Choose it. Each card leads to its own content item.

Outside a card, **Link to the item** is not offered. Such a link always opens like a page, never in an overlay window.

If the content item’s type has no page, the link disappears: its words stay and a button keeps its look. A heading that displays a data value has no anchor: the table of contents and the breadcrumb leave it out.

## Mark a date written in a text

You write “July 7” and want search engines to know which day it is.

1. Select the words of the date.
2. Click **Data**. Your words stay and the panel opens on **A date written in the text**.
3. In **Day**, choose the day.

A visitor reads your words, a search engine reads the day. As long as you keep the text written for the chosen day, it changes with the day. As soon as you edit it, it stays yours.

In the editor, a written date is recognized by its dotted underline. On the site, nothing sets it apart. It is formatted like a data value and receives an anchor in the **Advanced** panel.

**Note:** However they display, dates are written in a tag that search engines read. This applies to the publication date, the modification date, a date field and a date written in a text.

## Understand how an empty value displays

A content item just created from a template often has empty fields. On the site, an empty data value displays nothing: no value, no empty block, no text before or after. “Area:” does not stay alone.

Zero and No are values and display: a price of 0, “Furnished: No”.
